  • Seasonal Decoration Guidelines

    SEASONAL DECORATION GUIDELINES
    (Interior and Exterior)




    Rush week, holidays and all other special events can be a fun and safe time in the Residence halls, Greek houses and all other USA facilities.  In order to keep our students, faculty, staff, and their families and friends safe from fire, a few simple precautions are necessary.

      Natural Materials
     
    Because of their combustible nature, the following materials shall not to be used for decorating:

      Corn stalks
      Leaves/Branches/Untreated cut trees, evergreen wreaths and garlands
      Raffia
      Hay
      Bamboo
      Cotton

    Other natural materials, such as pumpkins, squash and gourds are permitted.  Questions about other decorative materials should be addressed to the USA Fire Marshal.

      Paper, Streamers Foil and Plastic Decorative Materials

    Crape paper, streamers or other decorative paper products, used for decorations must be labeled “Fire Proof”, “Flame Proof” or “Non-Combustible”.  Be sure to read the label prior to the purchase of any of these materials.  Plastic bags and plastic sheeting shall not be used for decorating.  These type materials are highly combustible. The use of angel hair is prohibited.

      Emergency Equipment

    Decorations shall not block, cover or any way obstruct any part of the fire alarm or sprinkler systems.  Extinguisher cabinets, emergency and exit lights may not be covered and regular corridor lighting cannot be completely covered.

      Exits

    Exits shall not be blocked or hidden in any manner.  Corridors shall not be “wallpapered” with combustible materials.  Combustible decorations are not permitted in the stairwells.  No decorations, which may interfere with safe passage or evacuation, may be hung from the ceilings or rooms, hallways or lounges.  Free standing decorations may not block aisles or exit routes and are to fire resistant and well secured.


      Candles/ Pyrotechnics /Open Flames

    The uses of lit candles, pyrotechnics or any flame-carrying devises (incense, potpourri or other flammable materials) are STRICTLY PROHIBITED at all University facilities.  Safe alternatives include flashlights and battery operated candles.

      Lighting

    Electrical lights must be UL approved (Underwriters Laboratories).  The UL sticker must be intact.  Lights should not be place against anything combustible.  Only UL surge suppresser outlet strips are permitted for multiple electrical connections.  Never leave lights unattended.  Halogen lighting in prohibited in residential halls.

      Temporary Structures

    All temporary structures constructed on any of the University campuses must be reviewed by the Safety & Environment Compliance Department prior to constructions
